There seems to be a strange phenomenon that drives people to include “exercise regularly” as part of their New Year’s resolutions. But what happens after a few weeks or even a matter of days? Why do we tend to be inconsistent when trying to have a more active lifestyle? Well, this can be blamed to a lack of self-discipline which causes us to easily be distracted – much to the point of forgetting to shake our muscles.

Knowing this as one of the main reasons why you cannot accomplish your fitness goals, maybe it’s time to establish yourself and be more focused! Here are some steps that you need to take in order to build that self-discipline which will lead you to the path of success – not only in the aspects of health but in most areas of your life.

According to studies on cognition, goal setting is the key to success. But pushing ourselves to unreachable limits has its toll in both our physical and mental health. Thus, the best way to build discipline is to set achievable yet challenging goals. This can aid in increasing the bodily dopamine levels which regulate muscle movement and coordination. However, if what you are aspiring to attain is something that is too easy to achieve, you may lose interest rapidly.
It is also important to note that time-bound goals are more effective in priming yourself for exercising. Set the frequency of your exercises within a specific period and schedule the time and duration. You must stick with these, too, so that your body can develop these as a routine which will make you have irresistible tendencies to work once the clock strikes!

Exercising with a friend, a colleague, or even a relative can help increase accountability to build up an individual’s discipline. Researches in the field of social psychology show that the presence of someone else can influence an individual’s ability to commit to an activity. Your efficiency, in the form of speed and energy output, can increase when you have a gym buddy.
Also, if you have a special someone who you can encourage to work out with you, psychology has provided substantial evidence that couples who sweat together do in fact have a higher likelihood of staying together. When physical arousal due to strenuous activities occur, this may be misattributed to romantic attraction. Your emotional bond can also be strengthened if you do exercise routines together because mirroring behavior may actually evoke greater feelings of connection between people.

Sure, you had too much stuff to do for the day and you could not pick the right time to exercise even though you promised yourself that you would. You whine in annoyance and state that you are not in the mood. Well, instead of wasting your precious time on complaining, you should get back to business and hit the gym immediately so as to not let your unaccomplished responsibilities pile up.
Complaining is not just conceptually toxic. It literally leads to the shrinkage of your hippocampus which is localized for problem solving and intelligent thought – according to a research from Stanford University. An individual that expresses dissatisfaction regularly may eventually be primed for negativity bias which can hinder the development of self-discipline. Once you get hardwired for negativity, it may be impossible for you to focus on your goals – yielding you to retain a sedentary lifestyle with greater health risks.
