Om is not just a sound we chant. It is presented in the tradition as the sound-symbol of Brahman — the limitless reality. In this reflection on the Gayatri Mantra, the words Bhūḥ, Bhuvaḥ, and Svaḥ are unfolded as the three planes of existence: the earthly realm, the ancestral plane (Pitṛ-loka), and the celestial realm. All of them are illumined by Savitur Vareṇyam — the Supreme Light.
This light is described as Bhargaḥ, the radiant principle that removes ignorance, and Devasya, the shining One — from the root “div,” meaning to shine. When we say Dhīmahi, we meditate upon that light. And when we say Dhīyo Yo Naḥ Pracodayāt, we are asking that our intellect be inspired and illumined.
Perhaps the Gayatri Mantra is not merely a ritual chant, but a quiet prayer for clarity — a turning of the mind toward illumination.
