I imagine San Miguel de Allende to be most people’s first Mexican destination, save for maybe Cabo. The city is overflowing with American tourists, yet still somehow holds onto its magic. It’s a small place coming from Mexico City, but what it lacks in size it gains in those narrow, maze-like streets. Getting lost in San Miguel was easy and exciting, and worry not, you’re always in close proximity to coffee. Even though the Americans speak no Spanish, and the Mexicans just want to speak English, it’s still good-old Mexico, and that’s good enough for me.
I spent about one week here, and I made it a point to wake up every morning to watch the sunrise and hit the town. My favorite days were spent wandering just outside the center square, searching for warm light and silhouettes. I used my 23mm almost exclusively, offering up more of a documentary-esque style compared to my usual work. Also, no portraits for this one, as almost everyone stalking the streets looked strangely like me, haha.
