The Green Vault is a historic treasure chamber in the Dresden Palace, in Dresden, Germany, founded by Augustus the Strong in the early 18th century to display his immense wealth. Its treasures include goldsmithing, jewelry, and curiosities made of ivory, amber, and gemstones, such as the Dresden Green diamond. The collection has a history of surviving war and theft, including being damaged in World War II, temporarily confiscated by the Soviet Union, and a major 2019 robbery from which some pieces have been recovered. 


Founding: Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, began the collection in 1723 as a symbol of his power, commissioning it as one of the world's first museums of its kind.
Expansion: The collection grew to include over 3,000 masterpieces, filling eight rooms with treasures from all over the world.

WWII and aftermath: The collection was moved to the Königstein Fortress for safety during WWII bombings, which damaged the building itself but preserved the treasures. In 1958, the collection was returned to Dresden after being seized by Soviet forces.
Reopening: The collection was restored and reopened to the public in two parts: the Neues Grünes Gewölbe (New Green Vault) in 2004 and the original Historic Green Vault in 2006. 

The vault houses some of the richest treasures in Europe, with 3,000 masterpieces of jewelry and goldsmithing.

The Dresden Green: This 41-carat naturally green diamond, acquired by Augustus the Strong's son, is one of the most famous pieces.

The collection includes ivory carvings, jeweled objects, and works by the famous court jeweler Johann Melchior Dinglinger, such as a diorama of the Grand Mogul Oran Zeb's birthday populated by 4,909 diamonds, rubies, and other precious stones.
