We wanted to provide a glossary for some of the terms we used in this video to make sure it's accessible for a wide audience. Here are some definitions we hope are helpful!
Food apartheid: A system of segregation that keeps people from certain groups (e.g., races/ethnicities, income levels, or social classes) from accessing healthy foods.
Food desert: An area in which it's hard to find affordable, high-quality food.
Food swamp: An area with a high volume of unhealthy food options.
Structural racism: When systems and institutions systematically benefit white people and harm people of color. Structural racism doesn't require anyone to be trying to oppress anyone else -- "structural" means that the unfairness is baked in.
Vaccine hesitancy: When someone isn't sure they want to get a vaccine because they aren't sure if it's safe or effective. (People may be vaccine-hesitant for many reasons. Racism can lead to vaccine hesitancy, because medical authorities have a long history of mistreating and exploiting minority groups. If you want to learn more about this, we recommend the work of Harriet A. Washington, particularly her book Medical Apartheid. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/bo...)
