The Spartans won a tough game against Notre Dame, 23-13, en route to a 10-2 season. This season marked Nick Saban's last at Michigan State. The Spartans were led by future hall of famer, Plaxico Burress. They also featured a bevy of future NFL players and other standouts, such as TJ Duckett, Chris Baker, Julian Peterson, Robaire Smith, among others.
The Spartans pulled away in the 4th quarter in a tight 16-13 game when Bill Burke hit Gari Scott for an 80-yard on a third down. Burke finished 21-of-37 for 292 yards with two touchdowns. Michigan State beat the Irish for the third year in a row. After this game, Nick Saban improved his record against Notre Dame to 3-0. The victory game the Spartans their second 3-0 start since 1979.
