The legend of the Slenderman may be one of the earliest documented urban legends that has originated from the internet.
The very first reports of Slenderman sightings appeared on web forums in 2009, when images surfaced of a tall, slender figure watching children from a distance. The figure is seen wearing a black suit, with long limbs and a blank, featureless face.
Whilst the entity was only reported online in 2009, the legend allegedly has roots stemming back thousands of years. Wood carvings from the 16th Century depict a being named “Der Grossman”, a slender figure with no face, eerily similar in appearance to that of the Slenderman.
One of the earliest accounts of an encounter with Slenderman was written in 1702, and translates to read:
“My child, my Lars… he is gone. Taken from his bed. The only thing that we found was a scrap of black clothing. It feels like cotton, but it is softer… thicker.
Lars came into my bedroom yesterday, screaming at the top of his lungs that "The angel is outside!" I asked him what he was talking about, and he told me some nonsense fairy story about Der Großmann. He said he went into the groves by our village and found one of my cows dead, hanging from a tree.
I thought nothing of it at first…But now, he is gone. We must find Lars, and my family must leave before we are killed. I am sorry, my son… I should have listened. May God forgive me.”
Videos of alleged encounters with the Slenderman have been popping up all over the internet for years. In many of these videos, audio and visual glitches occur the closer one gets to the entity. This has led to theories that Slenderman may have an effect on technology itself, even destroying video cameras to avoid being captured.
The Slenderman is said to be somewhere between 6 and 15 feet tall, sometimes described as having tendrils coming from its back. The creature is generally regarded to be male due to its shape, however, the shape it inhabits may merely be a Glamor used to throw off its targets, meaning the Slenderman may, infact, be female or genderless.
Some people believe that the Slenderman is, infact, a manifestation created from the fear of humans. Due to this, they believe that the being feeds on fear itself to sustain itself - without the fear of humans sustaining the monster, it would cease to exist.
Another disturbing aspect to the Slenderman mythology has come to light in recent years: proxies. Proxies are said to be servants of the Slenderman, mind-controlled to do its bidding. These proxies are under a trance, often going days without conscious thought. Most proxies remember nothing of their time under the Slenderman’s control once they come to their senses.
Proxies are often seen wearing masks to hide their identity. This, along with the fact that Slenderman itself is seen to wear a suit, shows that the Slenderman has some sort of awareness of human norms. The Slenderman appears to wear a suit in order to blend in with its surroundings. Proxies wear masks so they cannot be identified on camera, as proxies, unlike Slenderman, do not affect technology.
Slenderman does not merely kill its victims - it torments them. It has been known to stalk its victims for years before eradicating them. Once the Slenderman chooses a victim, they are doomed. They can run, they can hide, but Slenderman will always find them.
Victims of Slenderman’s stalking often report symptoms of a bizarre illness - one that has been dubbed “Slender Sickness”. Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, coughing, headaches, amnesia, fatigue, and memory loss. The closer the Slenderman gets to its intended target, the worse their symptoms become.
