Damal Krishnaswamy Jayaraman (22 July 1928 – 25 January 1991), widely known as D. K. Jayaraman or DKJ, was a distinguished Carnatic vocalist from Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. The younger brother and foremost disciple of the legendary D. K. Pattammal, DKJ carved out a place of his own in the Carnatic music world. He was celebrated for his soulful renditions, impeccable diction, and deep devotion to classical tradition. Born into a musically inclined and orthodox family, DKJ’s earliest musical exposure came through his sister, D. K. Pattammal. He began accompanying her in concerts at the tender age of seven, earning the affectionate title Isai Thambi (“younger brother of music”) from the great T. N. Rajarathinam Pillai. When the family relocated to Madras in the late 1930s to support Pattammal's burgeoning career, DKJ immersed himself in the vibrant Carnatic music environment of the city. He received rigorous training from several stalwarts of the tradition, including Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, Madurai Mani Iyer, Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar, and most profoundly, Papanasam Sivan who regarded DKJ as a son. DKJ’s solo career began to flourish in the late 1960s, buoyed by the encouragement of mridangam maestro Palghat T. S. Mani Iyer. By the 1980s, he had become a leading figure in Carnatic music. His performances were marked by deep bhakti (devotion), clarity in lyrical expression, and a passion for reviving rare and challenging ragas. A devoted and respected teacher, DKJ trained many prominent disciples who have carried forward his musical legacy. Among them are Vijay Siva, R. K. Shriramkumar, Balaji Shankar, and his daughter, Sukanya Jayaraman. His son, J. Vaidhyanathan, has also earned distinction as a mridangam artist. DKJ was widely admired for his humility and progressive mindset. At a time when it was uncommon, he encouraged and supported the inclusion of female accompanists in concerts. What could have continued as a long and illustrious career was tragically cut short. In December 1990, DKJ was awarded the prestigious Sangita Kalanidhi by the Madras Music Academy, one of the highest honors in Carnatic music. Heartbreakingly, he passed away just a month later, on 25 January 1991, leaving the music fraternity in deep mourning. His legacy endures through his recordings, the reverence of his students, and the lasting impression he left on Carnatic music.
