Climbing hydrangea is pruned after flowering when new growth has lengthened. Since this hydrangea can grow up to 80 to 100 feet in length one has to be careful that it does not overtake a structure upon which it is growing.
This video shows how to artistically prune a climbing hydrangea that is growing on a stone wall so it becomes more like a tree than a vine. Without this pruning the stone wall would become completely covered with the vine.
Bonsai pruning techniques are utilized in this kind of pruning which is similar to the video on the Japanese style pruning of a Viburnum. By "making a space for the birds to nest" sections of the stonewall are revealed. Bop shows us how its done.
