What’s the role of bio-media in an aquarium filter? As the name suggests, it acts as a medium for biological growth, particularly bacteria. When nitrifying bacteria grows in the filter, it carries out the nitrogen cycle in the tank, controlling the ammonia levels.
Ammonia itself is very harmful to fishes and can even kill the fishes if left uncontrolled. You can always perform a water change and add fresh water to reduce ammonia levels in the tank, but you can’t always rely only on this method, as frequent water changes can be stressful to the fishes in your tank. If nitrifying bacteria is present, it will control the ammonia levels, and you will have to perform water changes less often, which is good for you l, as well as for the fishes.
I explained as many details as I could in a one minute video, and I’ll upload a full video on my channel (link in bio). You can watch it for more details
