We are reporting from Kanda Jinbocho, Tokyo’s historic "Book Town" and the world’s largest district of its kind. As a global hotspot for bibliophiles, there is no better place to announce the winners of the 174th Akutagawa and Naoki Prizes.
The Akutagawa Prize was awarded to Makoto Toriyama for "Toki no Ie", a novel narrated by a house itself, and Ushio Hatakeyama for "Sakebi", a sharp and witty critique of society. The Naoki Prize went to Teru Shimazu for "Café no Kaerimichi", a delightful story of women working in early 20th-century cafés.
Experience Japan’s deep literary tradition from the heart of its publishing culture. Take a look!
