Methods to Reduce Cortisol in (2023) | 6 Ways to Quickly Lower Your Cortisol Levels
Changing what you eat can have a big effect on your stress levels because what you eat affects your cortisol levels.
Cortisol is called the "stress hormone" because it helps your body wake up and get ready for action. It also starts the "fight or flight" response. But it also helps your body in a lot of other important ways. Cortisol helps control everything from sleep cycles to inflammation to blood sugar levels and blood pressure.
Cortisol is made by the adrenal gland when there is a physical or mental threat, like an injury (like a deadline). Cortisol isn't bad in and of itself, and it can be helpful in the short term. However, being exposed to it for too long can cause a chronic stress response, which includes more anxiety, depression, fatigue, inflammation, weight gain, higher blood pressure, a weaker immune system, and a higher risk of diabetes and heart disease. So you can see how lowering cortisol can have a big effect on both physical and mental health.
When researchers looked at how diet affects cortisol, they found that people who ate a traditional American diet (high in fat, sugar, and carbs) had much higher cortisol levels than people who ate more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and polyunsaturated fats. Cortisol's effects can be cancelled out by eating foods that reduce inflammation.
Inflammation is basically the body's low-level response to stress. Your immune system sends out macrophages and cytokines to kill pathogens, but as a side effect, it also damages healthy tissue and causes the body to be under stress all the time. Inflammation also makes the intestines more permeable, which is called "leaky gut." This lets bacteria into the bloodstream and makes the body react by making more inflammation.
When we eat foods that cause inflammation, we basically start the stress response in the body, but you can choose foods that lower cortisol, inflammation, and the stress response.
As we go through this list of foods, you may notice that it has a lot in common with the Mediterranean diet. Researchers have found that the Mediterranean diet is a good way to reduce inflammation and improve mental health.
