I hiked 34.7 miles from Little Jimmy Campground (mm 383.7) to the trailhead at mm 418.6, where I was picked up from a friend. That's 8 more miles than my longest day on the AT! I forgot to turn on my Garmin until a few miles in, so my actual track is longer than what appears on the map.
I had to road walk due to the PCT being closed from Hwy 2 at Eagles Roost Picnic Area (mile 390.2) north until the PCT and Burkhart Trail intersect (mile 393.8) near Buckhorn Campground. Per FarOut, the PCT closure is for the protection of the endangered mountain yellow-legged frog and its critical habitat.
I passed the PCT 400- mile mark, but didn’t see any sign so I made my own with pine cones.
I originally stopped at a tent site at 33.7 miles in. When I had checked the upcoming weather forecast in Wrightwood, the bad weather didn’t appear too bad. However, I checked the weather again a few miles before camp when I had cell service, and it showed wind chills of 10-11°F with rain and snow for early next day. I set up my tent, and the wind wasn’t too bad. However, it picked up very quickly afterward, so I decided to contact and friend and night hike to the road where she picked me up. I’ll take a few zeros in town to hang out while the weather improves and snow melts. I need to slow down so I don’t get to the Sierra too early in the season.
