Sharif Osman Hadi, a spokesperson for Inquilab Moncho (Platform for Revolution), was shot in the head by masked assailants on December 12 while travelling in Dhaka. After initial treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he was transferred to Singapore General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on December 19.

His death reignited mass protests in Dhaka, Chattogram, Rajshahi, and Gazipur, with demonstrators blocking Shahbagh Square and demanding the extradition of those responsible for the killing. While protests eased by Saturday, reports of arson attacks, vandalism of political offices, cultural institutions, and media houses continued to emerge.

Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, strongly condemned the violence and appealed for calm. Authorities have confirmed arrests in connection with the killing, though investigations are ongoing.

The episode has once again underlined the deep political tensions in Bangladesh following the 2024 uprising, the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and ongoing demands for accountability and justice.
