Llandudno Pier - Llandudno.comLlandudno Pier, at 2,295 feet (700m), is the longest in Wales, featuring iconic Victorian and Edwardian design. Opened in August 1877, the structure was designed by James Brunlees and built with cast-iron columns and wrought-iron beams, later extended to the promenade in 1884. A Grade II* listed, award-winning attraction, it offers a "Pier of the Year 2025" experience.
Key Historical Milestones
Origins: The current pier replaced a previous, shorter 1858 wooden jetty destroyed by a storm. Construction began in 1876, with the main 1,234ft section opening in August 1877, followed by the extension in 1884 to its current length.
Design & Construction: Built by Walter MacFarlane of Glasgow's Elmbank Foundry, the structure is a masterpiece of Victorian engineering.
Evolution: The pier-head pavilion was added in 1905, and major alterations were made in 1938 to the landing stage, which was crucial for steamers arriving from Liverpool and the Isle of Man.
Destruction & Revival: A severe fire in 1994 destroyed the shoreward pavilion. The pier was purchased by Alan Williams in 2015, ensuring continued investment in its maintenance and the return of steamer sailings.
Accolades: Recognized for its historic significance, it was named "Pier of the Year" in both 2005 and 2025 by the National Piers Society.
Today, the pier remains a vibrant attraction, featuring traditional seaside attractions, food kiosks, a Big Wheel, and stunning views of the Irish Sea and North Wales coast.
