Back in 2001, Venice Beach California, right next to the world famous skate spot called "The Pit" (AKA) The Venice Pavilion, there was what looked like a small prison yard. For reals yo, right there on the beach, all Walking Dead style, a prison yard. The city used it as storage for sanitation vehicles, dumpsters, old tires, used needles, random homeless shopping carts, you know, the usual. Im sure you have one like it in your town.
If you go further back in time it was called the Damson Oil Facility. Yep, OIL! Black gold, Texas tea. The Damson Oil Corporation used it for CRUDE OIL PRODUCTION and STORAGE between 1966 and 1989, but it was abandoned in 1991 and by abandoned we mean ABANDONED which is code for "neglected shit hole".
It was eventually pumped dry, the oil wells were capped. The site was demolished, dug up, the grounds were HAZMAT sanitized, weird vents got installed, the whole thing was returned to sand for almost a decade. Do that Scooby Doo wavy line thing and our little skate park idea from long ago suddenly appears in this very location. YAY!
These days we stare at the Venice Skate Park and wonder how many people understand what used to be there, how gross it was, how many corpses it yielded, or if the whole thing will go Atlantis during the big one. Insert Awesome visual here.
Anyway our job @ VeniceSkatePark.LA is to reminisce, pour some of the 40 out for the homies, hip the current Hipstercritical inhabitants, and expose the predominant resident Douchebaggery to WHATS WHAT!
So, for all those who don't know, now you know.
