"Madonna did come to Open Arms, in this very office to, she had a look at two of our children who in most ways would have been perhaps more suitable than the child she ended up with in as much as that both of these children had been completely abandoned had had no family whatsoever. Anyway, for whatever reason they weren't taken by her. But anyway the nice part of that story is that both have subsequently been adopted by Malawian families and are doing extremely well."

"If you are a non-Malawian and you want to adopt a child here you have to be a resident for at least seven years. Then you can apply to be a foster parent. But it does depend on the nature of the case. If for example the child has been completely abandoned, and you come from a country that has an adoption agreement with Malawi, then you could start processing your adoption application immediately. The most important thing is it has to go through the courts."

"We look after these babies only for two years after which we send them back to their relatives but it does happen that some of the relatives can't manage, can't cope, so we do still keep some."

"Chifunero was underweight because he was born premature. When he went to Open Arms he gained weight and was taken care of. He came back to his village when he was two years old.

LEAD IN:
Madonna is planning to adopt a second child from Malawi.
A Malawi welfare department official said the pop star had filed adoption papers in the southern African country. The case could be heard on Monday.
In Malawi, the Social Welfare Department estimates there are one point three million orphans, in a country of 14 million.
STORYLINE:
Open Arms Infant Home in Malawi's commercial capital, Blantyre, is a transition home caring for orphaned infants. It is entirely dependant on charitable donations.
