They posed with ivory-handled revolvers. They wore them to briefings, to inspections, to map sessions behind the lines. But on Omaha Beach, on Utah Beach, and in the burning ruins of Berlin, some of those pistols weren't symbols anymore. We cross-examined after-action reports, memoirs, and military archives to find out exactly when — and whether — the generals of World War Two actually fired their personal sidearms in combat. The answer is more complicated than the legend.
