Thinning and pruning trees promotes healthier forests by enabling trees to have more sunlight, soil nutrients and water. By reducing the density of trees, and by removing dead trees from your forest, potential fire intensity is reduced.
Thinning entails removing a portion of trees within an area thus reducing the stand density. Pruning the lower limbs of spruce trees can provide more light to the forest floor and reduces the ability for wildfire to spread from the ground upward into the tree.
Thinning and pruning are both broad subjects. If you have no experience thinning and pruning trees, and you want to improve the condition of your forest and reduce wildfire intensity, check out the video.
The video will provide an introduction and hopefully, it will encourage you to contact your local forester and the Division of Forestry & Fire Protection.
