Pokémon was created by Japanese game designer Satoshi Tajiri in 1996. Developed by his company, Game Freak, the first games—Pocket Monsters: Red and Green—were released in Japan on February 27, 1996, for the Nintendo Game Boy. The concept was inspired by Tajiri's childhood hobby of collecting insects and exploring nature.
