The Arctic Ocean is the smallest ocean on Earth, but it is also one of the most hostile. Covered by shifting sea ice, long winters of darkness, and unpredictable storms, these waters have challenged explorers and ships for centuries.
This documentary examines the forces that shape the Arctic Ocean, from seasonal sea ice and powerful currents to the narrow and uncertain routes of the Northwest Passage and the Northeast Passage. It also explores the long history of Arctic exploration, including expeditions led by Willem Barentsz, William Parry, Fridtjof Nansen, and Roald Amundsen, along with the famous losses of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror during the Franklin Expedition.
Beyond exploration, the Arctic Ocean plays a critical role in the global climate system. Sea ice reflects sunlight, cold waters influence ocean circulation, and changes here can affect weather patterns across the Northern Hemisphere.
Remote, unpredictable, and often unforgiving, the Arctic Ocean remains one of the most challenging environments on Earth.
