Václav Talich, conductor
Czech Philharmonic Orchestra
Recorded, 1929
in Dělnický dům, Prague
Nobody is more identified with Ma Vlast more than Talich. This is the first full recording of it with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Made by HMV (EMI) in 1929, it is impossible to get the data to make it truly accurate. Although the abandoned hall still exists, there is no way to accurately determine how the orchestra was placed. Like our prior post we estimate in the blind, and let acoustics tell us what to do.
Although the glorious acoustics of Dvorak Hall in the Rudolfinum were right across town the microphone technology of 1929 simply could not handle the luscious long reverb times it produced. Nevertheless, HMV was the class act of engineering a century ago, and the recording is quite listenable.
Some surface noise does remain because of its age, but this post now means we have all three of Talich's recordings of this work in restored versions. BTW, look for the 1954 version with our newest methods on this channel very soon. Hint: it's amazing.
