Today marks the end of the holy Kartik month and the day is celebrated as “Kartika Purnima” all around the State. Every year on Kartika Purnima, people take bath & sail miniature boats with lamps and crackers in rivers & water bodies. This celebration is called Boita Bandana, which commemorates the rich maritime history of Odisha.

But this year’s festivities were dampened significantly due to the ongoing COVID19 pandemic. Prominent ghats and water bodies in the state were visibly empty as Sec 144 was imposed by the administration to prevent gathering.

Due to the restrictions imposed, congregation at the Bindusagar and other water bodies in Bhubaneswar also sported a deserted look. A large number of police personnel were deployed near Bindusagar and Lingaraj Temple to prevent crowding.

The famous Bali Yatra and all other festivities related to Kartika Purnima have also been prohibited throughout the state this year.

In Puri Srimandir, the holy trinity took on the Raja Rajeswar Besa. For this ceremony, the deities adorned gold ornaments in what is also called the ‘Suna besa’. Every year lakhs of devotees throng Puri to worship the deities, but this year due to the restrictions, it was a low key affair. The Pancha Tirtha and Mahodadhi which are usually crowded with locals and tourists on Kartik Purnima, looked empty due to COVID 19.

Meanwhile, the Habisyalis and other devotees expressed their disappointment at not being able to witness the Lord in their adornments.
