I made this simple kayak hoist system by pulling together different ideas I found on the internet. Maybe there are videos out there that are similar, but I couldn't find them. That is why I went into detail with this video. it cost me about $160.00 for all material and winch. the max load capacity holds 250, maybe more. My kayak fully loaded is almost 200 lbs and I tested it with that. it's been hanging for a month and so far no issues.
Hope this helps!
Below is the list of materials and the instructions:
• 10 ft ceiling and no room to stow kayak any other location in or around home
• Keep out of the sun
• Able to drop onto truck bed without lifting
• Quick disconnects
• 3 hrs to install
• Total cost $160 (not including battery)
1x - 2x4x10
1x - 2x6x8
4x - 1/8-inch quick link
4x - 3/8-inch x 3-1/2-inch stainless steel spring link
4x - 3/8-inch x 4-inch eyebolt with nut
8x - ALC washers (2 washer per eye bolt). I am not sure what size. Just match them to the bolt.
1x - 100 ft ¼ rope rated 200 lbs. or more
8x - 1-1/2-inch ceiling mounted pulley
1x - 2000 Badlands winch (or winch of your choice)
1x - box of #10 x 4-inch exterior screw (you will use 42 screws for this project)
1x - 3/16-inch x 1-1/2-inch nickel-plated ring. Must be rated 200 lbs. capacity or more.
1. Get 2 boards……2x4x10 and 2x6x8. Cut both in half equally.
2. Mount the 2x4x5’s on ceiling to beams with 9x 4-inch exterior wood screws (each board)
3. Drill and insert the eye bolts (don’t forget washers) into the 2x6 boards, about 2 inches from edges.
4. Mount the pulleys 4 and 4 on each ceiling 2x4. Look at video for spacing.
5. Mount your winch on either end of the kayak. Make sure you have enough room to raise and lower your kayak. ***This is very important!***
6. Put 2x6’s on the ground below the 2x4’s and add a heavy object to keep them in place.
7. Put a stainless-steel spring link on each of the eyebolts
8. Thread the rope through each of the pulleys and tie to each stainless-steel spring link
9. Make sure each line is tight and tie the other ends to each of the 4 - 1/8-inch quick links.
10. Take the 4 - 1/8-inch quick links and secure them to the 3/16-inch x 1-1/2-inch nickel-plated ring.
11. With the winch cable pulled out to the needed length, connect the 3/16-inch x 1-1/2-inch nickel-plated ring to the winch Hook.
12. Connect battery and test lift.
