Flying Scotsman steam train service, 1960's
Kings Cross station London England May 1968, 40th anniversary of Flying Scotman's first journey between London and Edinburgh. Coal is loaded. Train in the station with huge crowds on the platform. Platform clock shows 10am. Driver checks his watch. Driver at the control. The original Flying Scotsman train leaves Kings Cross alongside its successor. Lots of steam. Policeman keeps crowd back from edge of platform. Train now travelling at speed. Driver at controls. The Scotsman hurtles through a station. Brief view inside a carriage of passengers on the journey. Overhead view of the train crossing a viaduct and travelling through countryside. Wheel level view. Aerial views. Flying Scotsman travels through an industrial landscape of factories and plants. Passengers working at a table in the train. Passing a signal box. More aerial views of the journey. Very fast travel along the track. Railway crossing gates close and train passes crossing. Flying Scotsman races through the countryside and under a bridge and through a large station. Children wave from the roadside. Near Doncaster the train slows due to a damaged line. Driver looking out the side of his cab. Wheel view of wheels turning slowly. The train is off at speed once more after a signal is raised. York Station, the Scotsman passes through as people take photos from the busy platform. More spectators lining the route. Second driver enters the driver's cab and they swap over. The Scotsman picks up water as it passes over a water trough. Crossing another viaduct at Durham. Below there are houses with smoke coming from the chimneys. Durham Cathedral. Shovelling coal and feeding the boiler. Boys taking notes at a table as they travel on the train. Overhead view of train as it crosses a major junction of lines. Flying Scotsman slowly enters Newcastle, Tyne bridge is passed. Man in control box hangs up telephone and presses switch on his signal control panel. View of countryside and coast as train continues north. Scotsman arrives in Edinburgh. Pipe band playing. Crowded platform and enthusiasts and people waiting to greet the train. 40th Anniversary sign on side on train. Lord Provost shakes driver's hand as crew disembark.
