Empathy is about putting yourself in someone else's shoes and understanding their position. There's another important perspective as well, it's understanding that you can't put yourself in their shoes and see their position. You don't know what it's like to be then. And assuming that you do can often put you in a arrogant perspective where you say, well if I was you I'd do this and I'll just get over it by doing that. When actually, if you were them you would do exactly what they're doing! And that's empathy.
