The Chicago Horn Loudspeaker Guys wrap up their visit to Stereo Rehab in this episode by introducing the Altec 604 drivers and the introduction United Recording Electronics Industries (UREI) 800 series of Studio Monitors developed by Bill Putnam and Ed M. Long back in 1973.
The Guys and Kasper talked about the UREI 813C, an all JBL version of this classic studio monitor and its predecessors that used Altec, Eminence and PAS drivers. The guys also discussed their smaller, less well known siblings.
Enjoy!!
A condense history of UREI:
Founded by Bill Putnam Jr in Chicago in the 1950s as Universal Audio
Moved to Hollywood in 1957
Rebranded as UREI in 1967
Collaborated with Ed M Long Assoc. to introduce the 813 family of time-aligned large-format studio monitor speakers in 1977.
The 813 and subsequent models introduced in 1979, including the 813A, 815A, and 811A, used Altec Lansing and Eminence drivers.
The 813 and 813A used sophisticated crossovers (presumable designed by E. M. Long) to delay the out put of the horn to further time align the outputs of the compression driver to the woofer.
Crossover uses analog delay lines to achieve this purpose.
The 813 uses Eminence 15” woofer to augment the bass
The 813 uses the Altec 604-8G but with a new horn
In 1983, financial and alleged quality control problems at Altec (or simply because JBL bought UREI), led UREI to introduce the 813B, which utilized PAS and JBL loudspeaker drivers, followed by the 813C which uses all JBL drivers.
Putnam sold UREI to Harman in 1983, and UREI became a division of JBL Professional. Harman began releasing "JBL-UREI"

The Chicago Horn Loudspeaker Guys are two retired regular guys who love music, stereos, and audio reproduced by horns! The purpose of our YouTube channel is to share historic and current information of Horn Loudspeaker technology with music lovers of all ages.
Our channel features interviews with owners/enthusiasts of Horn Loudspeaker Systems in the Chicagoland area as well as towns and cities from the surrounding States (Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa.). To understand their history, the music priorities and to glean from them knowledge on getting the best possible sound from their systems.
We also collect information from online forums and if possible, conduct experiments to validate our recommendations. We share the knowledge we gain with our viewers in an honest, straight forward and no-non sense manner (and hopefully in an entertaining way). Be forewarn, we do tend to go off topic at times.
We focus on classic designs from Altec, Electro-Voice, JBL, Klipsch, as well as more contemporary designs from Bruce Edgar, Tom Danley, Classic Audio Speakers, VOLTI Audio, G.I.P., AMPSANDSOUNDS, as well as many others. We also feature unique DIY efforts that we deemed interesting for our viewers.
We hope the information we share on our channel is useful to audio hobbyists and encourage new comers to embrace horn loaded loudspeakers, and ultimately include them as an integral part of the sound system(s).
Our videos include subtitles in over 35 languages. Our hope is for our viewership to expand beyond North America, to include music lovers across all continents. Ultimately, we hope to keep the flame going for horn loaded loudspeakers.
