News just dropped that Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey, The Flash) has been hired to write The Brave and the Bold for James Gunn's DC Universe—a movie that will center on Batman discovering he has a son, Damian Wayne, the ruthless kid who becomes Robin. If you're a longtime fan, this adds to a growing pile of red flags.
So what's actually going wrong with Batman on the big screen? I make the case that there's something fundamentally broken in how Hollywood is trying to adapt the character right now—and I don't think a truly faithful, satisfying Batman movie is even possible in the current environment.
Is the Dark Knight doomed to end up on the same scrap heap as so many other once-great franchises? Or is there still hope for a version that gets him right?
