WRAWBY POSTMILL
Built between 1760 and 1790, Wrawby Postmill is a Grade II* listed, fully operational post mill near Brigg, Lincolnshire. It is the last working post mill in the north of England. After becoming derelict in the 1940s, it was restored by the Wrawby Windmill Preservation Society and reopened in 1965.
Wrawby Windmill Key Historical Facts
Purpose: Originally built to grind wheat, barley, and oats for the Elsham Hall estate.
Structure: It is a post mill, meaning the entire body rotates on a central post to face the wind.
Operational History: Worked until the 1940s, when damage to a sail and the war effort halted production.
Restoration: Rescued from potential demolition in the early 1960s; restored with new sails, a new buck (body), and restored internal machinery.
Modern Day: Maintained entirely by volunteers and open to the public on select bank holidays and Sundays from April to August.
The mill is now a rare, functional example of 18th-century agricultural engineering, often featuring in local education and tourism.
