The busy fuel station leaving Alston tells you this is a popular part of the A686 and for good reason - the Hartside pass section, seemingly made for drivers and rider alike.

Immediately after crossing the bridge you start climbing and it's not long before you have great views across Alston moor. It's also not long before the road gets way more interesting with long, smooth corners and license testing straights.

Reaching the top, you are stuck by the commanding views towards Solway Firth and the Lake District. A popular meeting and viewing point, once the home to the famous Hartside Cafe which has since burnt down. There are many visitors from driving enthusiasts to people looking to enjoy the renowned sunsets this view offers.

The road continues down towards the valley below and feels like whoever mapped this looked for every curve that this hill could offer. Driven or ridden fast, this can be a testing section and those regular visitors will certainly have been passed by ambulances and police.

The road then meanders sedately through small villages and into Eden valley before approaching Penrith.

Those thrill seekers or a driver / rider testing their vehicle or skills often turn around and go back up the hill. The road seems very different in this direction, it eggs you on but be careful as it can cost you your licence ... or much worse.
