As part of Breaking Barriers Refugee Week (03 to 10 March 2023), and following on from our 2022 Citizens of Change Panel Discussion (Journeys into Volunteering and Activism), this panel discussion moves on to explore the journeys of three amazing individuals who have gone on to set up their own charities to support people with refugee backgrounds.
They each share their stories of what prompted or inspired them to become involved in this area of work, and why they decided to take the extra step of setting up their own charities. They explore the practicalities of doing this, and some of the challenges encountered along the way. They delve into the differences between setting up a voluntary group and setting up a charity, in terms of practicalities and impact, and finish by offering tips for anyone who is keen to set up their own charity or voluntary group, or who wishes to get involved and support an existing organisation.
