Seoul Walk: City Hall Station to Euljiro 3-ga Station

The green plaza in front of City Hall used to be a congested and noisy roundabout. Today, it's the site of numerous events throughout the year, including the opening of an ice skating rink in the winter. On weekends when no event is taking place, locals come to spend some leisure time, and children play in a sidewalk fountain when the weather is hot. That's how it was for this walk on a Sunday afternoon.

We start at Gate 5 of City Hall Station (Seoul Subway Lines 1 & 2). Outside, we get a look at the Sejong-daero (00:41), the main north-south boulevard in central Seoul, across which we see the wall of Deoksu Palace, one of the royal palaces of the Joseon Dynasty. We then get a good look around the plaza before continuing on our way.

We see the old City Hall building, which was built in 1925 and is now the Seoul Metropolitan Library (01:28). Behind it is the wave-shaped current City Hall (02:38), which opened in 2012.

At 03:20 we cross Mugyo-ro and pass by two entrances to an underground shopping mall. The underground passage stretches from City Hall Station all the way to Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Station several blocks to the east, with shopping malls beneath every intersection. Here, the mall is called City Star Mall, and these are Gates 1 and 2.

At 4:24, we see the Lotte Hotel. The basement of the east wing is quite busy, as there's a shopping area there which connects Eulji-ro station with the flagship Lotte Deparment Store just behind the hotel.

We pass by Gate 1-1 (05:31) and Gate 1 (06:31) of Eulji-ro Station, then cross to the south side of the intersection with Namdaemun-ro (07:14), where we see Gate 7 (08:06). We then cross Namdaemun-ro (08:15) and pass Gates 5 and 6 (08:44) before continuing east along Eulji-ro, keeping the popular Myeongdeong shopping district to our right.

We pass some more gates to the undeground passage. The mall at this intersection is called Eulji-ro 1-ga Underground Shopping Center. The gates here are named for the street, e.g., Gates Eulji 1(09:12) and Eulji 2 (10:19).

We see some well-known office buildings, like SK Tower on the north side of the street (10:52), home to SK Telecom, and the Myeongdong Headquarters of Hana Financial Group (11:25). At 11:41, we see the first of several gates we'll pass that lead down to Eulji Star Mall, the name of the shopping mall beneath the intersection of Eulji-ro and Samil-daero.

At 14:10 we cross Samil-daero and continue east to Gate 12 of Euljiro 3-ga Station (Seoul Subway Lines 1 & 3), where we end our walk.
