We are all familiar with the physical damage that storms inflict on trees and urban forests but what are the long term implications these natural disasters and other tree disservices impose on communities?
An EF3 tornado touched down in Glade Springs, VA in 2011 causing widespread damage in the community. Ten years later a research team at Virginia Tech, led by Dr. Eric Wiseman, returned to the town to assess the physical and cultural impacts of the 140 mph winds. Their findings reveal how people can feel after storms that damage trees and how they may respond to tree damage, other trees, and efforts to replant. Building upon those lessons learned we’ll take time to review personal stories and experience in Philadelphia, PA shared with researchers when they asked “what barriers prevent community participating in tree planting initiatives in Philly.”
Join us to discuss lessons learned from the Glade Springs tragedy and people’s lives in Philly, and how they can help us as arborists and urban foresters respond to the disservices related to trees when working with our clients and communities.
