RUSSIA: MOSCOW: PRESIDENT YELTSIN ATTENDS MOSCOW DAY CEREMONY

President Yeltsin was looking healthy and in good spirits at a Moscow Day ceremony Saturday.

Yeltsin was joined by the Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin at the celebrations which mark the founding of the city in the twelfth century.

Looking full of vigour and in good spirits, Russian President Boris Yeltsin joins government officials to celebrate Moscow Day.

Yeltsin invented the idea of a special day for Moscow eight years ago when he was Mayor of the city.

Yeltsin was joined by his Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin, on the right here, and the Mayor of Moscow Yuri Luzhkov, on the left, both of whom are considered potential successors to Mr Yeltsin.

The city authorities have adopted a popular Moscow song called, 'My dear capital' as a new anthem.

A new Moscow City flag featuring a picture of Saint George killing the dragon was displayed for the first time Saturday.

Moscow Day is held on the first weekend in September and marks the founding of the city in 1147 by the legendary prince of Muscovy Yuri Dolgoruky.

A carnival procession of folk dancers and entertainers culminated in a float representing the famous Bolshoi Theatre.

The bigger celebrations this year are a rehearsal for Moscow's 850th anniversary in two years time.
