Cambodia's co-premiers on Sunday (22/6) gave conflicting
information about the fate of notorious Khmer Rouge leader Pol
Pot, one saying he had been confirmed captured alive, the other
saying he was already dead.

(Khmer followed by English translation) "Fifteen minutes ago I
learned that Pol Pot has died already. But one and a half hours
ago Pol Pot was on top of the mountain and they were bringing
him down. We can see the sky but we don't know how far it is
from earth to sky"; cutaway; "before we could talk about
defection because there was a political and military
organisation with Pol Pot at the top and some people who
defected from Pol Pot and integrated into the government. right
now Pol Pot at the top has been arrested or has died so there is
nothing to defect from, only surrender to the government and if
you continue to use the word defection it must be from the

WS Ranariddh in crowd outside Olympic Stadium; Ranariddh SOT
in English: "Today it is clear that they [Khmer Rouge] have
joined the Kingdom of Cambodia, they are respecting the
constitution - sooner or later, they will be part of the royal
kingdom of Cambodia....in order to stabilise the situation, they
have to show....if they continue to criticise the government, it
is not acceptable. I will not accept ....Street scenes; street

UN Secretary General's representative to Cambodia, Lakhan
Mehrot, speaking at Council of Ministers: "Both premiers have
signed the letter I do not know how long it will take and can't
comment on possible veto by China at the security Council"
