The situation regarding the new head of the country's richest municipal corporation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has become clear. The state’s Urban Development Department has announced reservations for 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, including reserving the post of Mumbai Mayor for the 'General Women' category. Following this decision, it is now certain that a woman councillor will occupy the 'first citizen' chair of Mumbai.
This reservation was decided through a lottery, conducted at the Mumbai Secretariat under the chairmanship of Minister of State for Urban Development, Madhuri Misal. With the announcement of this reservation, political activity in the corridors has intensified. After the elections held on January 15, 2026, the Mahayuti alliance (BJP and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena) holds the majority. The BJP emerged as the largest party with 89 seats, while the Shinde faction won 29 seats.
