Welcome back to Wolf-Aqua, your channel for horticulture, aquaponics, and aquaculture! 🌿🐟
In this video, I show you the plant side of my decoupled aquaponics system a setup built almost entirely from reused materials from earlier projects. Let’s get started!
Here we are at my irrigation station, where I manage water flow for my grow table. The entire setup is a true DIY system, made from leftover equipment:
The rain barrel used to be the biofilter from my 2012 aquaponics build.
The screen filter (300-micron mesh) comes from my former school aquaponics project.

⚙️ How the System Works
Inside the rain barrel, a submersible pump with a float switch supplies nutrient-rich fish water to the grow table. For now, I water the plants manually when needed instead of running an automated cycle — mostly because this year’s weather has been quite wet.
It takes about five minutes to fully flood the table. After pumping, the water drains back through the screen filter into the reservoir. The filter traps coarse solids, keeping the water clear and easy to maintain. A quick rinse and it’s ready to go again!
Because the water does not return to the fish tanks, this setup is called a decoupled aquaponic system. The nutrient water circulates in the plant system only, until the plants absorb or transpire it. When the level drops, I simply refill the reservoir with new fish water.
💡 My Experience So Far
The system works great for growing plants! However, since the table collects rainwater, the water level in the barrel can rise significantly after heavy rain.
To prevent flooding, the float-switch pump activates automatically once the level reaches a set point sending the excess water back to the table. Even if it overflows, it’s not a big deal in the garden, and the sandy soil helps it drain quickly.
This simple setup shows how you can reuse old aquaponic parts to create an efficient and sustainable irrigation system. 🌍
