Since then, the war has rapidly escalated across the region. Hezbollah launched attacks from Lebanon while Israel bombarded Beirut. Iranian missiles and drones targeted Israel and U.S. bases across the Gulf, and explosions were reported across several Gulf cities as air defenses intercepted incoming threats.

The conflict also expanded into the Indian Ocean after a U.S. submarine torpedoed the Iranian warship IRIS Dena, killing 87 sailors. Meanwhile, the U.S. intensified operations using B-2 bombers, and Israel claimed near-complete air superiority over Iran.

The global impact has been significant. Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20 percent of global oil flows, triggering spikes in crude and gas prices and disrupting international travel across the Gulf.

With no clear endgame and U.S. officials warning that attacks may surge dramatically, the conflict shows little sign of ending soon.
