“We left the Saudi Hospital from the rest area at 7:00 a.m. and reached the Al-Rashid area, which includes the Military Hospital and the Medical Corps, after being transferred there at 8:00 a.m. At 8:10 a.m., the Al-Rashid area fell into the hands of the Rapid Support Forces. After it fell, people fled in all directions, people were running through every street. I chose to move southward toward the Artillery area, and after great difficulty, I managed to reach it.”

“Shelling and gunfire began, targeting both civilians and soldiers from all directions. There were people killed and wounded. Survival depended purely on luck, the person who managed to escape was the one who survived. Escape had to be done cautiously, running from one building to another, from one trench to another. Although the distance from Al-Rashid to the Artillery area was about one kilometer, it took me six hours to reach it because the shelling, clashes, and gunfire never stopped.”

“After we left and walked toward Tawila, we moved at 8:00 p.m., after nightfall. We travelled in groups of about 200 people, led by a man known as the guide, who knew the roads and paths leading to Tawila. We decided to move, and about half an hour after leaving the city, we found a trench surrounding Tawila, three meters deep and three meters high.”

“During our escape from Al-Rashid to the Artillery area, there were many bodies everywhere. Even earlier, while leaving the Saudi Hospital on my way to Al-Rashid, there were bodies as well. There were wounded people, and others who were still alive and suffering, injured people calling for help. But there was no way to help them, because any movement could cost you your life. Survival was individual each person was trying to save themselves. There was no way to help.”

STORYLINE:
Three months after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces overran el-Fasher, the Sudanese army’s only remaining stronghold in the Darfur region, the brutality inflicted by the militant group is only now becoming clear.

Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim, who fled the city’s last functioning hospital with a colleague, said he feared he would not live to see the sun go down.

“All around we saw people running and falling to the ground in front of us,” the 28-year-old physician told The Associated Press, recounting the assault that began Oct. 26 and lasted three days.

“Escape had to be done cautiously, running from one building to another, from one trench to another," he said.




The fate of the rest remains unknown.
