As of 2025, ball bearings are still widely used in lower-end bicycles sold all over the world. This video covers the removal, cleaning, lubing, and reassembly of a bicycle wheel ball bearings.
Using new grease and proper adjustment is necessary for efficient rotation and long life. This process will be very similar to other parts of a bicycle where ball bearings might be used; the bottom bracket crank axle, and the steering headset. Most lower-end bicycles that utilize ball bearings have the cones set much too tight with little to no grease from the factory.
Routine maintenance of bicycle ball bearings is necessary to maintain an efficient running machine. Water and dirt can enter the bearings under heavy use outdoors. Plan on a cleaning and repack of your ball bearings once a year....and try not to store your bicycle out in the rain!!
