Proportional solenoid valves are used to regulate fluid flow rate by varying the orifice size, which is controlled by the plunger position. The regulated flow rate subsequently adjusts parameters affecting a process in a system, mainly fluid level, pressure, and for example temperature. Proportional solenoid valves are especially useful in systems in which the flow rate must be controlled quickly. They are only suitable for clean media.
When power is supplied to the coil, the plunger rises and pushes against the spring force to open the valve. In contrast to a standard solenoid valve, a proportional solenoid valve can be partially open, rather than only allowing fully open or closed. This is done by varying the power supplied to the solenoid coil.
The best control method is via a PWM signal. This type of signal is used to prevent static friction to ensure higher accuracy. A PWM signal places the plunger in a very fast but weak vibration, which ensures that there is constant friction on the plunger, which increases accuracy.
PMW Control signals are preferably provided by a so-called proportional controller. The usual inputs for these controllers are 0 to 5V, 0 to 10V, 0 to 20 mA or 4 to 20 mA . Common controllers are the Burkert 8605 and 8611 controllers. The 8605 is a controller dedicated for solenoid valves and the 8611 is a more universal controller that also works with other types of valves. More about controllers in another video!
