Antimicrobial Agents
The substances are used to kill or to inhibit /prevent the growth of microorganism
are called Antimicrobial Agents .
They are either microbicidal (they kill microbes) or Microbistatic ( they prevent the
growth of microbes).
Classification
On the basis of mechanism of action they may be of following type:
1) Antiseptic : these are the substances which kill or prevent the growth of
microbes on living tissues.( humans , animals )
2) Disinfectants : these are the substances which kill or prevent the growth of
microbes on Non-living tissues. ( clothes , floor ) .
3) Germicides : These are the substances which kill microorganism on both living
and Non-living tissues .
4) Bacteriostatic : these are used to inhibit bacterial growth .
5) sanitizer : These are used to maintain general public health and to clean or wash away organic matter .( saliva etc).
