In fact, assembly elections were held earlier this year in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Puducherry, and Assam. In Tamil Nadu, two seats fell vacant after two MLAs switched parties and resigned. Meanwhile, a by-election was necessitated in Puducherry after Chief Minister N. Rangasamy vacated one of the two seats he had won. Similarly, in Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari and Humayun Kabir won two seats each but subsequently had to vacate one seat apiece. In Assam, MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from his Lok Sabha seat to become an MLA, which led to by-elections there.
