In May 2026, immigration officers came to my hotel room in Pattaya, Thailand, asked to see my passport, and instructed me to go with them.
Several tourists and hotel staff were taken to Chonburi Immigration and held for approximately 2–3 hours. We were told that if we paid 2,000 baht, we could leave, that the hotel manager would reimburse us later, and that immigration officials would provide an official receipt.
I paid the money, but I never received the promised official receipt.
I recorded as much of the incident as I could before my camera battery died. I later filed an official police report and followed up, but I did not receive further contact from the local police station.
This video documents my personal experience and the circumstances that helped inspire Covert Alarm — a traveler-safety tool intended to help people preserve evidence and communicate with trusted contacts during situations where they believe they are being unlawfully detained, extorted, threatened, robbed, assaulted, or otherwise mistreated.
