When I first arrived as an American soldier in 2003, I lived in a bubble. The military base was like America on German soil - I never had to leave, never had to integrate. Even when I did venture out, the stares made me uncomfortable. Was it because I'm Black? Because I'm tall? I couldn't figure it out.

For years, I moved through German culture without really being in it. I worked in IT where everyone spoke English. I dated someone from East Africa, so I was navigating African culture instead. Germany remained this strange, distant world I drove through but never entered.

Then in 2017, everything changed. I got into comedy - and decided to perform in German, even though I could barely speak it. I stood staring at walls practicing jokes I didn't fully understand, using Google Translate to check my pronunciation. Night after night, I got on stage and spoke German to audiences… and something shifted.

The moment Germans realized I was trying to speak their language, the stares turned into smiles.

It wasn't about being fluent. It was about showing I cared enough to try. That simple act - learning even basic phrases - opened doors I didn't know existed. Within a few years, I was training project management courses entirely in German, traveling across the country, experiencing regional dialects and local cultures I never knew were there.

The superpower isn't language fluency - it's showing you're willing to learn the people, not just pass through their country.
