Rutland County Council — the smallest county in the UK — is £46.6 million in debt.
So what do they do?
🔺 Raise council tax by 2%
🔺 Increase parking charges to claw back £250,000
🔺 Close the local sports centre, because reopening it would mean scrapping the flood officer or the climate officer
…And yet, this week, they've advertised two brand new jobs:
🚍 A Transport Communications Officer (just for transport) — £32,000 a year, remote
🌈 An Employment Diversity & Inclusion Officer — £42,000 a year, also remote, with the vaguest job description I’ve ever read
Let’s break this down:
💸 That money could’ve filled 576 potholes
👩🏫 Funded two teaching assistants
🚓 Paid for four unmarked police cars
🏊 Or simply… reopened the community sports centre
But instead, the Lib Dems and Greens at Rutland County Council chose climate comms and woke box-ticking over frontline services.
This is not governance. It’s parody.
