During the era of naval warfare, all navies were known for their diverse array of weapons used on their vessels, and the Royal Navy was no exception. However, in the latter half of the 18 century, a particular model of sea service pistol became increasingly popular among Britain’s sailors. Although earlier versions existed, Britain ramped up the production of naval pistols and muskets during the Seven Years War like never before. The sea service pistol seen here, featuring a 9-inch barrel, was widely utilized during significant conflicts such as the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, and Nelson's campaigns in the Napoleonic Wars. In the 1790s, the barrel length was reduced to 9 inches for greater convenience during the boarding actions. This shorter model is often called the East India Co. Sea Service Pistol, as they were the pioneers of this modification. By the time of the Battle Trafalgar in 1805 and the War of 1812, a variety of barrel lengths were in use aboard ships. In the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, the props master creatively blended both old and new weapon models. After the Napoleonic Wars, many pistols were sold to the Mexican Army, a fact highlighted in the film Alamo, which features the Sea Service pistols in several scenes. Some of these pistols even made appearances in Pirates of the Caribbean and the Hornblower series. During the War of 1812, the American Navy likely had access to these pistols, especially after capturing British ships following the Battle of Lake Erie.
