One way we enjoy camping better is the flexibility of overnighting while on the move, staying at a Harvest Host or possibly boondocking. Our 2022 Keystone Montana 37991RD has the Keystone SolarFlex 400i keeping our two 100 amp hour BattleBorn batteries charged, but having the ability to supplement that with a portable generator is a real plus.
Most newer RVs have electrical circuit protection, an integrated transfer switch and/or an onboard inverter to provide AC to a residential refrigerator, the TV and perhaps other circuits in the RV. Many RVer's also use portable surge protectors. All of these devices check the circuit for a neutral to ground bond and none of them will allow the electrical connection to close unless that bond is detected.
But, when you hook up that portable generator the power won't connect! The reason - most portable generators have a "floating neutral". The easy solution is a Neutral - Ground Bonding Plug.
You can buy one pre-made for around $15. You can make one for under $5 using a short piece of wire, a plug you would use to repair an extension cord available at any hardware store and about 10 minutes of your time.
This video offers a quick overview of the process.

Disclaimer: We take no responsibility for any errors we may have depicted in this video. Make sure your generator has a floating neutral before inserting the plug into one of your 20 amp "Edison" style outlets. Use a 3 light outlet tester to determine if the neutral is bonded to the frame on your generator. If the tester reports an "open ground" this means the neutral isn't bonded to the frame.
