Another update. This time the VQ layer has been ditched which saves further file size as there are no codebooks needed. In replacement of the VQ layer, i have implemented a adpcm variant (my own 1bit ssdpcm1) which is for the frequency range 0-1200hz. I have now upped the sample rate to near 8khz but due to this (as well as trying to fit it under 650 bytes a second) I have reduced the AWE layers to 4 (5 layers including the ssdpcm1 layer)
The quality output sounds more natural for some titles (though suffers in others as well) - but from a test of 10 different types of songs, 7 came out better than any other previous implementation (even including the 8 layer AWE)
Some mix of songs here which have been merged. data rate is at just under 650 bytes a second
