BABY DODDS’ JAZZ FOUR: Winin’ Boy Blues (Blue Note Records 518, 10” 78RPM 1946)
Albert Nicholas, clarinet; Art Hodes, piano; Wellman Beaud, bass; Baby Dodds, drums. WOR Studios, NYC, December 26, 1945
Baby Dodds and his quartet do a fine slow drag Dixieland reading of Jelly Roll Morton’s Winnin’ Boy Blues, a composition that I know so well from the composer’s Library Of Congress Recording. Albert Nicholas is devastating with the low register of the clarinet on the first solo, followed by Art Hodes’ turn as the feature on piano.
Here is the thing about these early Blue Note releases, I might not be steeped in the finite history of Dixieland, but when I listen to these 78s I feel like they are all essential. What do you think after listening to this?
I’m closing out this weekend’s spins, I hope that you’ve enjoyed some of these battered old 78s
These posts are recorded from my well worn 78s, I implore you to seek out hearing higher fidelity sources. I’ve posted it solely for educational purposes with extensive notes, and falls squarely within the guidelines of the fair use exception under copyright.
